Breast Cancer Awareness Month: October 2024
At HMS, we are committed to promoting health and well-being in our community. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a vital time to raise awareness about breast cancer, its prevention, and the importance of early detection.
Understanding Breast Cancer
Breast cancer affects both women and men, making awareness essential for everyone. Early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment, so knowing the signs and symptoms is crucial.
Key Points to Remember:
- Regular Screenings: Women aged 50-74 are encouraged to have mammograms every two years. Women between 40-49y.o. are welcome to invite themselves for screening. If you have a family history or other risk factors, discuss personalised screening schedules with your GP. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. It involves compressing the breast between two plates to capture detailed images. These images help detect abnormal growths or changes in breast tissue, allowing for early diagnosis and treatment. This is free of charge and is performed on people with no symptoms.
- Know Your Body: Familiarise yourself with your breasts with monthly checks. Report any unusual changes—such as lumps, changes in size or shape, or unusual discharge—to your healthcare provider.
- Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, limit alcohol consumption, and avoid smoking. These lifestyle choices can reduce your risk of developing breast cancer.
- Support and Resources: We are here to support you. Our clinic offers consultations and resources for anyone seeking more information about breast health.
