During National Stroke Week, we encourage everyone to learn the F.A.S.T. signs of stroke:
F – Face: Has their mouth drooped?
A – Arms: Can they lift both arms?
S – Speech: Is their speech slurred or difficult to understand?
T – Time: Call Triple Zero (000) immediately.
A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted by a blocked or burst blood vessel. It is always a medical emergency, and receiving treatment quickly can improve the chance of survival and recovery.
Some strokes can be prevented. You can help reduce your risk by having your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose checked, not smoking, staying physically active, eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight and limiting alcohol.
Speak with your GP about a preventative health check and how you can reduce your individual risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease.
